8 Best Nintendo 64 Multiplayer Games To Play With Friends

Back in the day, a kid's social status in the children's society was measured by their ability to host playdates without parental interference. Well, during that time, there was a console that revolutionized multiplayer gaming – the N64.

While it may not have had the extensive game library or disc-drive capabilities of its competitors, it offered something truly special: four controller ports. Nintendo understood the importance of multiplayer gaming right from the start, and this feature became a defining characteristic of the console.

As a result, the N64 became synonymous with unforgettable multiplayer experiences. The initially unconventional alien-hand controller grew on us, eventually becoming a cherished part of our gaming memories. For those who hold a deep longing for those days, here is the curated list of the best multiplayer titles on the N64.

Hydro Thunder

This game graced Nintendo 64 as a powerboat racing game and is still probably the best. If you ever played Daytona USA, this game may be relatable since it has a similar gameplay.

The game features high-tech speedboats cruising through dangerous environments varying from New York’s post-apocalyptic version to the Arctic Circle’s cold seas. The water physics makes this game a tremendous multiplayer and offers brilliant push and pull racing techniques.

This game is highly challenging, but what gives great satisfaction is its mastering- the game comes with fabulous boats and courses that also have various paths and shortcuts. The high-quality graphics and stunning soundtrack design complement the game’s excellent controls, making Hydro Thunder a must-play.

Excitebike 64

Excitebike 64 is the game to play if you want to find out which one of your friends can outrun you on the road. This is what makes this game fun and addictive. If you are two players, you can use the standard mode to bike against one another or other AI opponents, but you can also play with up to four players.

This epic game allows you to take part in or attempt death-defying motocross stunts as you zoom around different tracks and courses.

Excitebike 64 is simply a blaze of glory as you navigate slinging mud and a pack of dirt. There is one race, and proving that you’re the best is a matter of chance as you race against the clock.

Donkey Kong 64

Donkey Kong 64 has a multiple-player mode accommodating 2-4 players; you can play using the Battle Arena or Monkey Smash modes.

Monkey Smash has six playing modes, while Battle Arena has 5. The former engages players in a death match design battle while collecting ammo and shooting, while the latter requires you to use explosives and weapons to attack. Monkey Smash uses an open arena, while Battle Arena uses a platform for gameplay.

Like the original game, Donkey Kong 64 employs five playable Kongs but with a hidden sixth character. The game also features Krusha from Donkey Kong Country and Donkey Kong Land.

The exceptional graphics are likeable, but the massive worlds you can delve into are also worthwhile.

1080° Snowboarding

If you have a group of friends looking for fun in a snowboarding game, then 1080° Snowboarding is a game you will love. It features virtually flawless graphics and polished control, and the sound effects are to die for.

The game has several play modes: Practice, Contest, Trick Attack, Time Attack, and Match Race. With the Match Race, you play against several opponents on several tracks with three difficulty settings.

Like the Trick Attack mode, the Time Attack mode keeps you racing as fast as possible. However, with the Trick Attack mode, you must perform some tricks as you go.

The Contest mode allows you to participate in five non-identical events, while the Practice mode teaches you how to leverage mondo snowboarding tricks.

Mario Tennis

Mario Tennis is another of the most addictive N64 multiplayer games. This game comes with a double team and employs simple controls. They are also intuitive enough to make you have a realistic tennis feel.

While playing, you keep your opponent(s) guessing by leveraging various stunts. You can mix up volleys and lobs or use different spins to unleash backhand smashes.

Mario Tennis employs the official tennis rules and has various modes. You can play using the standard Tournament mode or even choose the Piranha challenge. This game allows you to select up to 16 Nintendo characters to engage in the gameplay, and each one has specific attributes to make them stand out on the court.
