In the latest beta update of WhatsApp for Android, a new feature named "Third-party chats" has been introduced. It’s currently not functional and inaccessible to users, but this addition hints at a significant development for Meta's encrypted messaging app towards cross-platform compatibility.
WhatsApp has also released a new Channels feature to create the most private broadcast service in the world.
Whatsapp Third Party Messaging
Here’s whats happening: WhatsApp will work with other third-party messaging apps like Signal and Telegram starting in March 2024. So if you use any of these, WhatsApp is coming to the party.
WhatsApp and the European Commision
Here’s why this happening: the European Commission's declared that Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, qualifies as a "gatekeeper" under the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA). The DMA mandates that communication software like WhatsApp must enable interoperability with third-party messaging applications by March 2024. WABetaInfo shared a screenshot of the new screen, sparking curiosity about its implications.
The DMA, as explained in the European Commission's FAQ, aims to prevent gatekeepers from imposing unfair conditions and to ensure the openness of crucial digital services. In addition to requiring messaging apps to interoperate, the DMA also obliges gatekeepers to allow users to uninstall pre-installed apps and explore alternative app stores.
Notably, both Meta and Microsoft are strategizing the creation of their mobile app stores in response to the DMA's requirements.
This development aligns with industry trends as other tech companies like Microsoft also prepare for DMA compliance. Additionally, ongoing scrutiny is being placed on various digital services to determine their adherence to the DMA's standards.
Meta is steadily working other new tools, like its AI chatbot and an Instagram chatbot.
