Most people are struggling to master the art of producing a catchy, sweet-sounding song. A remarkable chord progression begins with knowing the different types of chords. Keep reading to discover different chords, their sound and where you can use each of them.

The term chord stands for a combination of unique notes. Every chord type including the guitar chord comes with a unique sound. Chords are made of a single note commonly referred to as the root note. For instance, you must have heard people talking about C chord; this is an indication that the chord root note is "C."

A chord requires two notes only that most of these chords come with about three notes. Chords that have three notes are known as triads.

Chord types

Here are the four most commonly used chord types. Some are used widely while others are rarely used. They include the following;

  1. Major chord: simple and happy-sounding

The major chords are featured by a full, complete and highly resolved sound. For instance, a happy birthday melody is built on the basis of simple major chords progressions. These chords are usually built through the addition of intervals of a perfect fifth and a major third on the chord start note. So here is a formula showing the elements that constitute the major chord;

Root note (1st) + major third (+ 4 semitones) + perfect fifth (+7 semitones) =Major chord.

  1. Minor chord

Minor chords are almost similar to the major chords only that they got a significant difference. They are said to be serious or sad. Minor chord has a root note, a minor third as well as a perfect fifth. It is as follows;

Minor chord= root note (1st) + minor third (+3 semitones) +perfect 5th (+7 semitone).

The minor chords are known to express varying emotions in music. In simple terms, you build this chord by adding a perfect fifth and a minor third on the root.

  1. Diminished codes

If you want a tensed and a harsh music sound, then this is the chord to build. You will build this chord by adding triton and a minor third on the root. Note that a triton consists of six semitones.

  1. Augmented chords

These enhance an odd and upsetting sound. However, the augmented chord is quite rare in music but they are built in a similar manner with simple major chords only that they have an additional raised fifth.

How to produce great songs with chords

To produce a great song that will take your music at the top, you must master the process of chords building. Successful chord building is easier said than done but with determination and practice everything will be easier and realistic.

All you have to do is do a thorough practice with your chords building them in multiple keys. When listening to any music ensure that you pay close attention to the music chords as well as progressions. You can also capture a mental note of the chords.
